Top 10 Eco-Resolutions Unveiled at Sprig.com Include
- Save your waist and the environment. Reduce the number of miles you drive to work by carpooling or using public transportation. By not driving to work one day a week you can reduce your CO2 emissions by nearly 400 pounds per year.
- Eco-cize your abode. Replace your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents, install a low-flow showerhead, and plug those leaks around windows and doors with weather stripping.
- Follow the star. Always look for the Energy Star label when purchasing appliances, light bulbs and more. The star can mean up to 15 percent more efficiency in some appliances.
- Offset carbon omissions. Book direct flights when traveling since a large percentage of carbon emissions are generated during take off and landing.
- Donate or recycle your old cell phones and other electronics. Before you throw away that “so last year” cell phone, think about recycling them; to find recycling drop-off sites near you, go to Earth911.org.
- Switch to toilet paper and tissues with recycled content. If every household in the U.S. replaced just one roll of virgin fiber toilet paper with 100 percent recycled ones, we could save 423,900 trees.
- Slay the energy vampires. 75 percent of all electricity used to power electronics is consumed after the products are turned off. Plug your stereo, television, iPod charger and printer into a power strip and turn off the switch when you’re not using them to cut off the electricity.
GOOD NEWS!
The outlook for Mother Earth is not as bleak as it seems, as we become more eco-friendly. Here is some good news as compiled by Sprig:
- Recycling is up! Americans are now recycling 42 percent of all paper, 40 percent of all plastic soft drink bottles, 55 percent of all aluminum beverage cans, 57 percent of all steel packaging, and 52 percent of all major appliances.
- Fashionistas are demanding labels to be more eco friendly. The BCBG Max Azria Group is the latest in a long line of prestigious designers to announce they are going fur-free this year.
- It’s getting personal. Sales of natural and organic personal care products grew a whopping 32 percent between 2002 and 2006.
- Less oil, please. The 49 percent spike in sales of hybrid cars between June 2006 and June 2007 drives home the point that we want to lessen our dependence on oil.
